What do I sign up for?
By joining the Belgian Alliance for Climate Action, you commit to acting on climate change by signing the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) commitment letter within the first 12 months after joining our Alliance.
Once you have committed to the SBTi, you have another 24 months to develop greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets that are in line with what the latest climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – to limit global warming to well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

What is the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)?
Science-based targets specify by how much and how quickly an organisation needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. A target is “science-based” if it is in line with what the latest climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial level and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
The Science Based Target Initiative is an international collaboration between CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and WWF International. The SBTi encourages businesses around the world to set ambitious science-based targets and lead by example.
Develop your own sustainability roadmap
Joining the Belgian Alliance for Climate Action will typically lead you through the following steps:

Sign the pledge
By signing the pledge, you become a member of the Belgian Alliance for Climate Action.
Condition: We ask you to join The Shift, the Belgian sustainability network. Read more about The Shift.
Deadline: Given the urgency of the situation, we encourage you to act upon your climate ambitions as soon as possible. However, there is no specific deadline for joining the Alliance.

Sign the SBTi commitment letter
By signing the SBTi commitment letter, you indicate that you will work to set a science-based emission reduction target.
After you have submitted the letter, your commitment will officially be recognised on the SBTi’s website.
Deadline: 12 months after signing the Alliance’s pledge

Submit a science-based target
Once you have signed the SBTi commitment letter, you have up to 24 months to develop your target(s) and get them validated by the SBTi.
Along the way, the Belgian Alliance for Climate Action will support you by offering case studies, webinars and workshops. You will find a science-based target tool and manual on the SBTi website.
Deadline: 24 months after signing the SBTi commitment letter

And learn, network, connect, grow…
Our workshops, guiding sessions and roundtables explore science-based targets from every angle. They offer practical tools to help you implement your own targets. Attending these events is an ideal opportunity for you to network and learn from experts and peers.
As a member of the Alliance, you also get access to a range of useful resources. Our guides, testimonials and draft strategies zoom in on specific subjects and sectors. They reveal how others have successfully tackled climate challenges and how you can do the same.
Membership The Shift
The Belgian Alliance for Climate Action is a joint initiative by The Shift and WWF and welcomes all organisations, free of charge. Still, arranging workshops and events does have a cost. That is why we ask you to join The Shift, the Belgian network for sustainability. This will allow you to participate in the Alliance's full programme and learning network.
Becoming a member of The Shift requires a financial engagement.
